For you DIY folks get yourself an 80mm 15 tang cap type filter wrench to use with a ratchet + extension. The filter from the Factory is WAY over tightened and is a common complaint for various Hyundai's. I couldn't budge the filter with the scissor type wrench, partially due to the angle of attack is so limited due to the plastic belly plate. Of course once you get the Factory filter off and properly tighten the new one you won't have the issue again. Having said that my 1.6 liter Turbo seems to like the Pennzoil Platinum fill. The engine seems to be a quieter at idle to my ears. I'm not sure if the Factory fill was Dexos gen. 2 oil which is now the standard for TDI engines.

Just did my first oil change on the weekend as well. The oil filter was ridiculously tight, and the oil dripped down the oil pan to the back of the skid (aero?) plate leaving a huge mess. Otherwise pretty straight forward on these cars. Havent noticed much of a difference with the penzoil ultra platinum but it seems to be good stuff.

To keep it from becoming a mess, stick a bit of crumpled paper towels between the oil pan and the plastic belly plate at the back of the oil pan. When the oil runs down the pan, the paper towels will catch it. Makes the job clean and easy.

Yeah I'll definitely be doing that in the future, just wasn't expecting it to run down like that. Never had that issue on my past car

Do you have the 1.6 Turbo? If so just an FYI, the Ultra Platinum will be fine, but long term you should change to a syn oil that meets the Dexos Gen 2 spec. (Platinum does, but Ultra does not) which came out in large part to help Direct injection turbos with a phenomenon known as as "low speed pre-ignition" here is some info.

From YouTube videos I saw, the trick that seems to help with the filter mess is to loosen the filter just to the point that oil starts to leak. It tends to run straight down the filter and drop through the belly plate filter access hole with out getting much on the topside of the plate. Just grab a beer and wait a couple minutes until the dripping stops. Then remove the filter keeping it up right and level as you drop it down through the access hole.
