Thoughts on running 225/50/17 for winter?

I just picked up a set of four nice rims locally for what I would have paid for steel wheels. They're 17x7 with a 48 offset. They came with 225/50s winter tires already on them which are a similar width but slightly taller (9.8mm added all around according to willtheyfit.com --speedo error of just under 3%). I'm running the 225/40/18s on the stock N-Line wheels (18x7.5 +53 offset)

Does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts about installing these? I called my local tire shop and they basically said they didn't want to put anything on my car at all because they were afraid of not knowing the sizing and liability for damage ... that kind of spooked me. The dealer was even worse for not wanting to touch anything.

What do you all recommend? Any reason to not just jack it up and give it a shot (other than the fact I'm scared of screwing up my new car)?

It'll be fine. I run smaller winters and it doesn't affect the car at all (other then speedo being off a bit). If you're stock ride height and proper offsets it will fit no problem
Check out this site: wheel-size.com/calc . I put in your specs and it shows reasonable clearances. The only dimension I'm not 100% certain of is the suspension clearance which I estimated at 40mm:

https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/?wh...50-17X7ET48&fcl=14mm&wcl=65mm&scl=40mm&sr=0mm

When I was searching for data to do a similar swap, the dealer had no clue on any of this.

I just installed a smaller winter setup with no issues: 17x7.5, 50mm offset and 225/45/17 tires.

Good luck.

That site is amazing. Thanks!

I've finally found a local tire shop that claims they'll give it a try for me. I suppose I understand where my dealer is coming from by not helping out, but they are also selling a car with summer slick tires in New England that's also quite popular in Canada. You'd think the knowledge would be out there.
I'll be running 225/45/17 Falkons on Steel for winter. Won't be a problem.

On my old 2018 Elantra GT GLS I downsized from 17's to 15's and they fit fine as well.
They fit. I'll post more pictures after I clean them up.

I have to admit that I kind of like that they're already a little curbed up, it means I can feel a lot less cautious about potholes and curbs for a change. Also I'm only into these for under $400 so I'm happy enough.

Hey man not sure if you're still on here, are those the 225/50/17's on your car in the picture?
